I am an amateur chef (though if you ask my wife and others I have cooked for, I should be a pro) and I love to use natural, fresh herbs in my cooking. I was hoping to start an herb garden where we are living now, as I have a wonderful outdoor space I can use. However, it doesn't seem to get as much sunlight as I had hoped. Any suggestions on herbs that are better suited to a more shaded area?
I have had great success with basil, cilantro, flat leaf parsley, mint, thyme, tarragon and chives in a semi shaded area. They seem to do a little better because they don't bolt as fast as if they were in full sun. The area gets dappled morning sun and as the sun moves west in the late afternoon its in full shade. That may be more sunlight than your area??
Excellent, basil, Cilantro and chives are the three important ones for me. There is some sunlight in the afternoon in the area I want to plant these, so we will see how it works. Now I just need to find a local place to pick up seedlings for these that are hopefully organically started.
